My question should have been, "which gaskets do I need sealer on, does it actually seal or does it simply hold the gasket in place until the part is installed and the bolts tightened?" Since the retainers for the rear crankshaft seal can only be removed by splitting the tractor, and I only want to do it once, I used the "copper coat" -- that's a brand name, has suspended copper particles, probably no better, hopefully not worse, than anything else. I have not had enough experience to know the difference between the various products.
