The impeller shaft is usually keyed to receive
the female end of a double universal slip drive shaft. This is so the implement can be lowered and raised and still receive power from the pto.

The tractor end of the drive shaft is a splined female coupler to fit on the tractor's PTO.

I'm not surprised your missing the shaft.
They are usually taken for use on something else.
As another poster stated, make sure you have a
shear bolt anywhere along the drive line, saves from wrecking your tractor's PTO when an obsticle
is hit.
