I believe the o-ring seals the coolant from the engine oil.

If so clean engine oil/engine oil additives shouldn't harm the seal. The o-ring will also have to withstand antifreez. I think any of the suggestions will work (veg oil, soap, engine oil, vasoline).

On my last engine I used STP for assembly but have also used clean engine oil.
