Help with 12 volt conversion on M

I changed my M over to 12 volt, but have problems. The engine will not turn over. I put a universal ignition switch in here's how it is hooked up. Starter post hooks to small post on solenoid. Battery post hooked to ammeter. Ignition post hooked to warning light that goes to #1 wire on alternator. I can jump the solenoid across and it will start. The wire coming from the solenoid has power coming from it. My thought is that the solenoid is bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
