The fact that the knock diminishes with the rise in operating temperature is a plus. Rod problems usually get worse! Try to explain or describe the noise in greater detail. Does the noise increase in volume with rpm increase, does the noise keep pace as the engine speed increases, does it occur at the speed of the engine or at about half of the speed of the engine? What does the oil pressure read at hot idle and at hot higher rev? Do not rev this engine very high until you determine its problem. Do you know what oil wt is in the engine?
