FYI engine noises

To locate engine noises I use a plastic transmission funnel, use the small end to your ear till you find the locaion of the noise, then reverse it with the big end to your ear to home in on the spot where the noise comes from. I pull the plug wire from the dist. cap side so I don't get shocked, when you lose the spark from the right cyl the noise will stop. A knock from the crank side of the con rod will have single hard rap at the oil pan level of the block then quit when the spark is removed on that cyl. A wristpin/ broken piston will have a double knock ,it will also stop when the spark is removed. A piston skirt will get less noisey as the engine warms up, The reason for the two knocks,when the piston reaches the top of its stroke, it pushes on one side of the cyl and when starts down it slams against the other side .
