I am not too sure on the 400 series tractors but did they have a magneto or a solid state distributor? If it is solid state then yes you can, just make sure you use the correct style spark plug wires, MSD boxes should not run on solid core wires. You might try contacting MSD directly for your application. Do a Google search to get thier phone number, it is most probally a toll free number.

Oh and PS, I do not know if MSD makes a six volt system, my last information was for 12 volt systems only.
