first restoration project, questions about H

Do I need to remove the (crankshaft?)pulley to take the cover off the front of the motor? And will I gain much in the way of being able to clean the crud (many years of non detergent oil) out of the motor by doing that in addition to removing the valve cover, lifter cover, and oil pan? If I should take the front cover off, is there anything I should watch out for, or is it cut and dry?
Also, the water jacket cover was secured with 4 studs and the rest bolts. Is there a reason for the studs (which came out just like bolts) or can they be replaced with bolts?
