It sounds like the little ball/spring that holds the fork in place may be worn or stuck up in the cover. I pulled the trannys on two Farmall H's last Summer. Drop the Belly Pump. Unhook the Clutch to Tranny shaft and yank the cover. Check the forks to make sure they are working properly in the tracks. On both of my Tractors, the 4th/5th sliding gear was bad, along with the gear it runs on below. The constant mesh gears looked fine. I would say it is a combination of a worn 4th/5th gear, shifter forks bent, and the detent balls/Springs stuck up in the cover or not working at all. Since it works for a while and then pops out...I would say the 5th gear surface is worn away, and the pilot bearing is worn as well. Keep us posted. E-mail me if you need help yanking the tranny parts. I got it down to an art. Scott
