Greg - Your generator is is a snap to disassemble. The front (pulley) end has a ball bearing - I don't know the part number, but it is clearly marked. A replacement is readily available at any bearing house, alternator shop, etc. The commutator end of the shaft is carried on a brass bushing pressed into the commutator end plate. Unless you have a small internal puller (or a tap the right size) getting the old bushing out can be tough. Best take it to an alternator shop and pay the guy a few $ to replace the bushing. Gas in the crankcase can result from the carb being set too rich, excessive use of the choke, misfiring plugs, a bad (stuck open) thermostat, and short runs under light load in cold weather. Often it's a combination of several of these...

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
