Well, the reason I thought of that was because I had a tractor that the plug would not tighten in far enough to clamp the outer bearing race. So I had to put the shim in there. The way I knew it was not clamping sufficiently was that I could move the steering wheel shaft back and forth. You should not be able to do that. First time I tried it, the shim was too big and it clamped not only the outer race, but the inner too. Couldn't turn the steering wheel.
