The casting codes would read like, 3*16*J, with the *'s appearing as slotted round head screws cast into iron. They started this system in 1931 with 'A, 1940 is J, 1941 is K. They used U and W in 1951, and they did not use the letter V. They started over with A again in 1955. This is a good way to determine if your tractor was put together with lot's of different parts from many tractors, or came that way from the factory, interesting enough, I have a '51 M that has some components with a 'W', such as the belt pulley housing and a few other components, and the rest of the tractor has the letter 'U', all cast within a couple of weeks from each other.
