steve-o, There are many discussions on oil types in the archives of this site, if you do a search, you can read through all the opinions, then formulate your own from that. Personally I stick with non-detergent as that was all that was used in my tractor when I got it. As for the water gauge, it will probably never move much unless it is very hot outside and you are really working the tractor. I had the same concern about mine, so I took it off and placed the sensor in boiling water, and sure enough, it came right up, so my assumption is that the C113 engine on the A usually never reaches high temps. unless maybe it works very hard. I don't have a generator, mine was converted to 12 vdc, and has an alternator. Works great!
