You should bear in mind that the splines on the driven gear (the one in your picture) and shaft might be worn. That or the roller bearing that supports the shaft might be bad. Sometimes there is a chain of small failures that lead to a larger one. I replaced the gear, shaft, and bearing on a SMTA before the gear failed. I was replacing the TA at the time.
