Sounds like you are a little confused. If the distributor alone has been removed, then it sure does have to be timed with the engine when you re-install it. You will need to have the engine at TDC on #1 cylinder. I think there is timing marks on the front of engine (needle, and marks on front crank pulley) but not positive. Note that wherever the timing marks are, that they will not only line up at TDC of #1,but will also line up at TDC of #3. Make sure they line up at TDC of #1. Then install the distributor so that it is firing #1 cylinder upon installation. If the front cover has been removed and the timing gears on front of engine has been monkeyed with, then yes, they should have some marks to line up. But as for the distributor, I think it just has to be manuelly timed. When timed correctly, the distributor should fire slightly before TDC. This might be able to be adjusted after distrbutor is installed, and checked with timing light.
