There should be a serial number plate riveted to the left side of clutch housing. The serial number on this plate would be the official number. These number plates are sometimes on occasion removed from tractor and are missing. If that is the case, a non-official serial number is stamped in right side of engine toward the front. On earlier models these two numbers would match more often than not. On later models these two numbers tended to not match, but the number on engine would get you pretty close if you are missing the plate. Wouldn't be off more than a year and if so it would be because of the Dec. to Jan. thing. Also if plate is gone, you can refer to casting codes in the major castings to varify that the stamped number on engine isn't leading you astray. The letter in the casting codes indicates a year. Certain letter, certain year. Of coarse that indicates when the parts a made and not when tractor is assembled so there again you have the Dec. to Jan. thing.
