I believe the copper rings fit into machined holes on the top of the engine block. You'll see the holes when you take the head and old gasket off. I used black spray paint as a sealer on my head gasket. This was suggested by some on this board. It was mentioned that most race car crews use the spray paint, so I figured it had to be OK. So far, it seems to be working just fine. Can't help you regarding the valves. Don't know much about them. Good luck, and have fun!
