Dave, The flapper valve that you're talking about is called a heat riser. I'm not sure how it works on the IH engines but on the early Ford's it would stay closed on one side of the exhaust manifold on a V8 causing the exhaust to travel through a port under the intake manifold to the other side exhaust manifold and heat it up faster. When the exhaust got hot enough the valve would open allowing the exhaust to exit freely and it will remain open during normal operating conditions. I believe the spring that you're talking about is the temperature spring the holds the valve closed when cold and will gradually open the valve as the engine heats up. Hope this helps! Ernie Bob
