I have found it is usually a good idea to fix it right the first time. I can't imagine that the shifter rod can be that expensive. If you have to order one part you might as well order the second part. With my kind of luck I would be pulling it apart a second time to replace the worn piece so there goes any $$$ that you thought you were saving. Just my $0.02 worth.
