What Steve has to say is very accurate. I live in SW Ontario, Canada, we have clay also. Unlike you , Steve and I recieve a lot more frost, very effective breaking up those clay lumps. I also read into your post that quite possibly this soil hasn't been tilled for awhile. If so, that will improve in 2-3 years. Here when gardening, I like to have a rotation going, one patch for my current garden, another in buckwheat crouds out weeds makes great plow down for building organic matter and improves soil fertility and a third patch probably in some grain. In Texas the crops you use may vary from ours, but you try and achive the same. Improve the soil structure. Check with your county agri office for best crops to achive this in your area. One note on buckwheat, plow it down before it goes to seed or it can become a worse weed than what you presently have. It is a very agressive crop in early stages of growth, thus it crowds out just about every nasty weed known. It will do the same with useful plants as well.
