Sam: dan and CNKS are right. I will confess something else. I have never seen or even looked for the timing marks on flywheel of a Farmall. I have put a few of them together from scratch and they started on first turn of starter. All one has to do is watch for piston coming up, put thumb over plug hole to determine if compression stroke, and line up distributor to suit. I have been asked to adjust distributor advance on tractors set with light and have been told by owners later I made tractor run smoother, more power, etc. 4 cylinder gas Farmalls just have that special sound when their dead right. The eye is not acurate enough for this with light, but the ear is. May be it is human impairments and not systems that are problem. I know guys that can't get to first base on this using the sound. Lets face it, some of us can sing and some of us can't. If we were all perfect singers, the music and recording industry would go broke.
