When I put engines back together, rather than buy or make an aligning tool, (there are dozens of different dimensions), I get a 3/8s socket that just fits the pilot bearing hole, place it on a long 3/8s extension, then slip a 1/2 inch drive socket behind it that just fits the clutch splines. You can get really close to being aligned this way. By leaving the pressure plate barely snug, one can then "eyeball" the alignment and get it near enough to perfect for the transmission input shaft to slip right in when putting her back together. I've used this method hundreds of times and it has always worked for me.
