Supposed to be 6 volt positive ground. I assume it has a magneto, not a distributer. If the other electrical equipment is disconnected, and you are using the battery only for starting, it makes no difference how the battery is hooked up. Otherwise, 12 volt, neg or pos won't hurt the starter, but you are going to fry your voltage regulator and possibly the generator if they are hooked to a 12 volt battery. If you use a 6 volt negative ground, you will ruin the regulator.
