Jim - Thanks for your kind words on the photo!! FYI - #14 wire is a typical single conductor in your house wiring. By comparison, an automotive battery jumper cable is about #2 (the cheap ones - good jumper cables are #0 or #00). And your average extension cord will have #16 or so conductors. For your testing purposes, anything from a #16 to about a #10 conductor will work - like a piece of old lamp cord. Bigger will work fine too, but is cumbersome to handle... An ammeter should be centered on 0 with everything shut off. If it's offset a bit one way or the other that's OK - just take the offset into account when making a reading. Now if the ammeter needle deflects to the RIGHT when you turn on the ignition, it means it's reading backward. Either the system ground polarity has been reversed, or else it's simply wired up backward. If the electrical system is working properly, the ammeter should indicate a few amps of discharge (deflect to the left of 0) with the ignition "on" and the engine stopped. Then with the engine running at speed, the ammeter should show charge (deflect to the right), the level of which varying upon the condition of the battery and the speed of the engine. Sounds complicated at first, but once you understand it's pretty straight forward!!
