Like Terry said he used a switch to turn on and off to excite the alternator. We installed a push starter button. As soon as you start the tractor you push this special button momentarily and you will notice the ammeter starting to charge. When you turn off the tractor; this button switch leaves the circuit open so it won't run the battery down.
