I have a 40, 42, and 43. The 43 deffinately has the switch mounted on steering post. The 40 is on gas tank support and I believe with push rod. It is a parts tractor. However my 42 is also like yours. Mounted on rear gas tank support and I beleive without any actuating push rod. I will look at the serial number and see if I can tell how it was from factory whether it ever had a lever or not. I will repost what I find out after I take a better look.
