More important than piston to sleeve clearance on a diesel is wear in the top piston ring groove.That is where you loose most of your compression.That should be a keystone compression ring and with the ring comressed to installed diameter there should be very little top to bottom movement of the ring.Diesel pistons very seldom wear in the skirt area because of the lubricating qualities of diesel fuel.
