Hugh - Good thing you got the oven knob replaced! One thing I've learned after 32 years of marriage is ANY deficiency in the other half's kitchen equipment can result in costly remedial action (i.e. dinner out...) The "hold" position on the timer is for charging at the low rate setting. Lets the charger run longer than the maximum time setting on the timer. Just don't go away and let it charge on hold for several days - you may wind up damaging the battery if you do. As for whether the timer knob should be turned only one way, it depends on the mechanical design of the timer itself. If uncertain I'd be inclined to turn it only in the direction it wants to go….
