Ted: In reviewing what I have said to date on this matter. Both the old type and new type have the breather, it is just a small dome type of cap (aprox 1-1/2 inch on top with a small pipe stem going into pto) much like a minature version of what you see on many tractor engine air intakes. There should not be any open holes on top of these units and they must have a breather. These breathers get damaged quite easily. I remember once going to dealer for a number of items, amoung them one of these. They were out of stock. My dad made one out of a small piece of pipe, an egg cup and some wire. We did replace later. All you must achive is keep water and dirt out and let air move. You should have a manual for which ever unit you have as adjustment is crucial on life of these units. I remember in my 300 and 560 operators manuals both showed old type pto. I had to get up date pages for adjustment on 560. My 560 was a 1963 model very last year.
