Richard: The 404 is a tractor I don't know a lot about. Is the pump inside the torque tube like larger Farmalls of that era or is it on side of engine just under the distributor and driven by timing gears like the 230 or 240? Do you have hydralic oil disapearing somewhere internally with no visable leak? Iregardless of where pump is, if screen is clear, hydraulic system up to full mark with hydraulic oil and no massive leaks anywhere, and if the system just stopped all of a sudden the problem has to be in pump or the mechanism that drives pump. Remember any wear within pump will be a gradual loss of hydraulic function. Sudden loss of function would indicate something has sheared off in drive mechanism. First place I would look is pump shaft itself.
