why won't it stall good?

I have the '55 farmall 400 gas, and it starts magnificantly, even with it's original engine, but when you shut it off, it almost is stalled, but than it's almost like it tries to refire twice, than either backfires or sounds like a woosh of air with shaking and a lot of smoke from under the hood? How can i solve it?
