I can remember dad driving one up from grandpa's place (150 miles) pulling a stack mover. He was getting tired and he came to the river breaks which had very steep hills. He decided to try the throwing the transmission out of gear and free wheeling down the hill. It didn't take him long to realize what a big mistake he had made. By the time he reached the bottom he had worn the brakes out and not sure but think he had to change his shorts once he had come to a stop.

I remember later on we went to overhaul it and found that the head or block was cracked. Dad had found another one he was going to use for parts. He ended up overhauling that one instead and the other one become the parts tractor. That was our biggest and main farming tractor for years.

I remember pulling an 18ft tandem JD disk with it. We had mounted an hydraulic system on it that run off the pto. Seemed like it took forever to turn the old thing around. Being kids we would always sneak cigs from dad and at night farming with it the ole muffler would turn red and then we could light the cigs. Seemed most of the farming implements we had were on the big side for the old W-9 so when we got the 660 we were in heaven. I can remember letting the W-9 dig clear to the drawbar before having to raise the implement.

The 660 had TA(saved down shifting), power steering and a better hydraulic system. Seemed after we got the 660 there was still work for the W-9 to do. We had our farm sale back in 1980 and was not sure what it brought. I for some reason remembered who had bought it and stracked it down a couple of years ago. I called the guy that had boughten it and he had sold it at his farm sale to another guy. I contacted the guy that owned it and asked him if he still had it and he did. I explained how it used to be one I had run years ago and asked if he was interested in selling it. The engine was still free, he had said he had never gotten it started. It had one rear tire flat and rim shot. The hood was missing but he knew where it was. Well I asked him what he wanted for it and he thought it was worth x amount and I said it was worth that to get it back in the family.

I had the tractor running last summer, first time in about 20 years. The clutch was stuck, but come free after running it some. I still haven't put the hood on it. The tractor can be seen at http://photos.yahoo.com/tomhuston. Hopefully if time permits I would like to get it rewired and the hood back onto it. There is probably many other stories my 2 older brothers could tell about this old W-9, for now it's home again.

Today's Featured Article - An AC Model M Crawler - by Anthony West. Neil Atkins is a man in his late thirties, a mild and patient character who talks fondly of his farming heritage. He farms around a hundred and fifty acres of arable land, in a village called Southam, located just outside Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. The soil is a rich dark brown and is well looked after. unlike some areas in the midlands it is also fairly flat, broken only by hedgerows and the occasional valley and brook. A copse of wildbreaking silver birch and oak trees surround the top si ... [Read Article]
