It sounds like you have a normal starting situation. An old Farmall will fire right away, even in the cold. You may need to play with the choke for up to 30 seconds to keep it running. This is normal.

An alternative starting procedure is to crank the engine for a couple of revolutions with the choke closed and the the ignition off, then pull the ignition switch, crank the engine with the choke open and then adjust the choke as needed.

I think with a little practice and adjusting your practices to your particular tractor and weather conditions it will be the finest starting engine you have! Doc.
