The 4-position switch was used on systems with a cut-out rather than a voltage regulator. The designations are: L - low charge, H - high charge, D - dim lights, B - bright (less dim) lights. In the low charge position, the generator output was reduced by placing a resistor in the feild circuit ground to prevent over-charging of the battery. In the high charge position, the feild grounds directly and output is increased. (Great for short running periods with lots of engine re-starts.) Voltage regulators on later models made this un-necessary.
