They used alcohol I believe as an additive to water. Worked good, but the problem was that alcohol boils at a lesser temperature than water. So as you can imagine, the alcohol would lesson over time and the water would stay. You had to constantly add alcohol to maintain the coolant so it wouldn't freeze. Some people just run straight water in summer and a fuel (kero or diesel) in winter. The problem there was that the fuel was not good on hoses. Reduced the life of hose considerably.
