the rearend holds over 25 gallons, you wont need to drain all of it, TAs are not that hard, you can get new or remanufactered ones relatively cheap. dont know what not taking care of the loose nut would do. If TA needs changed, be sure to remove gears one at a time and mark which direction they go, if second gets put in backward you'll jam up when you try 3rd or 4th after reassembly.
