Jim it can be done through the PTO housing but I think the best and easyest way it like the manuel said. Those bull gears are heavy and aligning the bull gear/axle splines will not be an easy job through that PTO opening. Beside being easyer it will also give you the opertunity to inspect all the gears in there. As for bearings, get the number off the bearing once you have them out. I doubt there will be much difference in price at a bearing shop. $340 sounds cheap to me comparied the the bearings I had to replace in my International 600. Try $1100 for four bearings.
