The 'fuel bugs' actually live in water but eat fuel. They are especially common on ships, where many fuel tanks are also used for water ballast tanks when the fuel is used up and the ship is riding high in the water. There is always a little water left in the bottom of the tank, and the bugs (bacteria) live right at the water/oil interface. There are biocides which can be used to disinfect tanks, but keeping your tanks dry will also help a lot (no residual water). A good shot of fuel dryer, many of which contain methyl alcohol (a poison which kills bacteria) should also help quite a bit, both with the water and the bacteria (make sure its compatible with your fuel). The dead bacteria will still have to be filtered out...they can really clog up a strainer if left alone. These same bugs are being used to fight oil spills: they get in with all the spilled oil and eat it up, cleaning up the mess in the process!
