SAm - that loose shaft could definitely cause the intermittant miss. I had the same problem (missing and a wiggly distributor shaft) on an old IHC pickup many years ago.

If the shaft is not badly worn you might be able to have a machine shop rebush the distributor housing. Or you could try for a decent used distributor from a boneyard (that's what I did). A CIH dealer MIGHT be able to locate a new one, but it'll likely be $pendy!
