carb question any model

I have been messing around with the carb on a 300 u. My question is the main fuel adjustment screw is supposed to have "packing" in the fuel adjustment plug to keep the adjustemnt screw from leaking and vibrating open or closed. I need to replace the packing, which looks like some form of lead or other soft material. Any ideas what I could replace the old stuff with? Would felt work? Thought I saw somewhere a small diameter string with lead impregnated into it. Would that work? Open to any ideas.
