shifting fork cub transmission

my 1st an rev shifting fork is broken. by talking to a local mech.(60 miles away)he stated that i would have to split the tractor in order to replace the fork.the shifting rod slid back toward the pto housing so i took the bolt loose to get it off.no problem.is there something else missing or wrong with my shifting rod.it looks good no wear.seams to me a good welder can weld it or braise.mech also said welding would not hold.is there that much pressure on it?thanks for your help!! is there anything i should be looking for?
