If in fact it is a SMTA it would have to be a 1954 because that is the only year they were built. While the engine number may not be a perfect match it should be very close to the serial number for the tractor. Look just below the #1 spark plug for this number stamped into the block on a milled surfact. You can find Serial Numbers listed on the Research & Info section on the left side of this page. Also you can check the casting numbers. These numbers follow a code (12-3-A = 12/3/31, 12-3-B = 12/3/32 and so on. The dash between the numbers and letters looks more like a screw head. Toward the end of a year the casted parts might have been used on the next years model.
