I have a '40 Farmall H that had the exact same problem. I replaced plugs, cables, coil, checked the head, you name it, and then while putting in a carburetor kit, I found that the float had a small leak and was letting too much fuel in from the tank: it would clear up after you had warmed up the engine. Before I went to a lot of trouble, I'd check the float, if not bad may just need adjusting. Might not hurt to put a carb kit in: the price is reasonable, and I found it cures a lot of little problems. Good Luck.
