Dennis - Could you have gotten the battery cables reversed when you installed the new battery? Try turning on the lights or the ignition without starting the motor and watch the ammeter. If it indicates charge, the battery connections are reversed. Swapping the connections, then repolarizing the generator (momentarily connect the GEN and BAT terminals at the regulator with a scrap of wire) should solve your problem. If the ammeter indicates DISCHARGE in the test above, there's a problem with your charging system. Repolarizing the generator as above may solve the problem - if it does not look for a failed generator or regulator.
