You have figured it out by the way you describe your procedure. There is a TDC pointer located on the underside of the torque tube behind that small plate. Laying on your back and looking toward the engine you'll see a cast iron pointer, pointing up. The difficult part is to find the mark on the flywheel. Where you have the engine now positioned, clean the flywheel at the pointer with a small brush and solvent. The marks are typical to what you would expect to find. Once you've located them, you can highlight them with some white paint or chalk. They are tough to see until you find them, then you'll feel like, "how come I couldn't see them before". Although the compression method of finding TDC that you used will work, finding the pointer will get you to exact TDC which will give you a better valve lash setting.
