that sensor is probably a switch to excite the alternator in lieu of an indicator lamp. the original electrical systems are simple, as well as the typical 3 wire delco alternator that is used to update the system. due to this simplicity, there is no end to the number of variations that can be done and still be "correct"-- they aren't authentic, but they are still electrically correct. with an alternator, you may be making more amperage than the ammeter can handle, so i would opt for a voltmeter instead, especially since they are a direct swap and perfect fit. your tractor is probably wired just fine to charge, all you need is an indicator (the voltmeter in this instance) to verify that it indeed is.
