J.Chesher, In addition to what Mark said -- a couple of ideas: Black smoke is usually an indication of a carb that's running really rich and/or incomplete combustion of all the mixture in the cylinder. You might check for an obstruction in the air flow, a stuck choke, the jet settings and float level in the carb. The situation you describe could be a carb running without enough air, or way too much gas. You could also have an igntion timing problem -- the plugs firing late as the exhaust valve is opening. This could also cause the backfiring and incomplete -- black smoke -- combustion. Meantime, whether the cause is one or the other or a combination of both, you've probably got some black soot on your plugs which will need to be cleaned as well.
