Hugh, I don't want to start an argument, and I do the same thing you do in that I let the tractor idle after working it, not for cool-down purposes, but rather to use up the fuel that remains in the carburetor bowl (plus the fact that I like to hear the old JD "B" idle). The beauty of a thermosiphon system is that it continues to circulate cooled water even after the engine is shut down. Granted the fan isn't pulling air through the radiator anymore, but the radiator still provides quite a cooling effect simply due to it's large surface area giving up heat to the atmosphere, and the fact that it creates a little airflow on it's own because it creates some air convection due to the heat it is releasing.
