I have a 54 SH and it had the same problems. 1.The timing was off 2.The carb idle air screw was set to "factory " specs, but it needed to actually be turned almost All the way out to get it correct! 3.Installed a new thermostat, the engine Never warmed up enough for proper combustion. 4.Went to Champion D-21 Sparkplugs.A lot of people say Champs don't work, but then again a lot of people Love old wives tales. If the plugs heat range requirments are met,it doesn't matter what brand you use-Champion was the original plug installed from IH from the factory so why not? If D-21 's still look bad after all the carb/ignition adjustments you may want to go to D-23 or down in range to D-18-look at the plugs and they will tell you if it's still too rich or it's got an oil control problem. However,Black smoke is too rich,White smoke is oil control/coolant problems. 5. Change the oil-if you were running that rich for so long, the oil will be diluted somewhat. 6.The valves were out of adjustment-some loose, most too tight Hope this helps some, HB
