Hydraulic ?

I have what I believe is a self contained hydraulic unit.It is shaped like a small keg. On one end(flat) there is a shaft and inlets and outlets. on the top(round area) is the fill cap and what I believe is the control for the valve, looked like a lever clamps onto these. Many years ago I saw a simular one on the back of a farmall(C or H) from a distance and believed he was using the pto to drive it.
I would appreciate any information about this unit and how it works.
